Elan Greets A Familiar Face

Mr. Foss Takes Over As Headmaster

Elan recently introduced its new Headmaster.  William A. Foss has assumed the position of Principal and Headmaster at Elan school.  Affectionally known as “Gramps” to many of the athletes, Mr. Foss has worked with the students over the past decade. He teaches American Government and History.  He has served as the assistant coach in track and field and cross country.

“He brings over 35 years of experience in teaching and adminstration, we are excited to have him in this role”, said Senior Director Clare Woodman.   Once a tank company commander, in the US army attached to the 101st Airborne Division, Principal Foss is familiar with being in a leadership position.

Mr. Foss was once the youngest superintendent in Maine's history at age 31.   He taught Field-Allen Middle School and was principal at Windham Jr. High School.  He became assistant superintendent in Windham Maine in the early 70's.  He later became superintendent of Windham Schools and served in that capacity for over 12 years.   After his wife was killed in an unfortunate automobile accident, he stopped working as educator so that he could spend time with his children.  He then began working for the Portland Newspapers for 10 years, as an educational training officer.  In 1990, he resumed his educational career as a teacher for Westbrook Middle School.  Foss was offered the position of superintendent and headmaster  when he joined Elan.   He wanted to be in the classroom and on the cross country trails working with the students.  When asked about importance of his time at Elan he stated,  "The only place during my entire teaching career where I felt I was succesful at having impact on the life of a confused student was at Elan.   And to see them go from despair to sucess is a reward envied by all real teachers."

"I hope to bring fresh ideas for change to help Elan keep growing in its leadership position of therapeutic schools."
