Grandparents' Day 2010

On Thursday, May 27th, 2010, we hosted our first annual Grandparents' Day.  The goal of the day was to reunite families and to provide an opportunity for our families to get to know each other.  Families could bring pictures for the memory board, perennials to plant in the garden and some even brought desserts to share with all students.

All students were assigned to a specific color-coded group.  Each student and his or her family member(s) had a name tag with their color on it.  The day started out at 8:00 am with families arriving to sign in.  All parents attended an orientation that included staff introductions and the "dos and don'ts" of the day.   At approximately 9:00 students joined their families at the color coded - designated spots.  The balance of the day was spent planting the perennials in the garden, having family photos taken, posting pictures on the memory board, outdoor events such as lawn bowling and just "hanging out."  A wonderful buffet lunch and a fabulous dinner bbq was provided by Elan's chef.  At the end of the day, a slide show of the days events was shown.

                          Grandparents' Day Poem

                                                                       by Lauren

Tears streaming down faces of grandparents, kids and parents

Smiles so wide they reach ear to ear.

Hugs so tight people might wither away to nothing.

Grandmothers kissing every square inch of kids' faces.

The sun’s gleaming perfectly right; not too hot, or too cold.

There isn’t even a cloud in the sky.

                                                           Grandparents are cackling away

While grandkids are glued to their sides.

How could this day possibly go wrong?
