North Haven: Buccaneers Journey to the Fox Islands
Rockland- On January 24th, 2011 the boys basketball team of Elan journeyed from Poland Spring to Rockland where they caught the ferry for their overnight trip to the island of North Haven. North Haven is one of the two Fox Islands, the other being Vinalhaven. It is located 12 miles off the coast of Maine and is one of 14 coastal island communities.
Elan won the first of consecutive games on Monday night by a score of 67-52. They played the second game early Tuesday morning at 8:30 am and won 74-46. Faculty members and families prepared a traditional Italian meal of pasta for the team. Captain Steve K and Coach led the team in saying grace before dinner. The Buccaneers got a unique opportunity to visit with the people who reside on the island and learn about the island community. About 300 people reside on North Haven year round. The island's population swells to around a thousand during the summer months. According to one resident professions on the island are not so diverse. Many of the inhabitants of the island work for the school district, are carpenters, fish or are lobsterman. Many of the people who live on North Haven have had families that have lived there for generations.
