Medical

Elan School has an on-site medical department where day to day health problems are handled by the medical assistant, Cindy O'Connor. Elan's Medical Director, Dr. Carl VanderPutten is a practicing emergency physician and is on campus weekly for new student admission physicals, follow up on chronic problems such as acne, etc. and sick call for more acute illness, flu etc.  Dr. VanderPutten is a member of the American Osteopathic Association.  He also comes on as needed basis for problems necessitating a physician’s evaluation but not rising to a level requiring an emergency room visit.  He supervises the medical assistant, consulting with her frequently on student health needs, prospective student medical concerns and consults with the various specialists providing care for our students.  The students are encouraged to speak with him about any concerns or health questions that arise.

On the date of admission, the student receives a brief intake assessment performed by the medical assistant.  On the next regular doctor’s day, our physician conducts a routine physical and lab work. Parents are billed by Elan for any visits to our school physician and may pursue reimbursement through private insurance. The medical department will provide any necessary forms.

The medical assistant makes daily rounds.  This is her time to see the students and address any of their medical concerns. There is a medical sign up sheet located in the Student Center for students to sign up for the next "doctor's day."  If they cannot be treated here, they will be referred to the appropriate professional with a parent's consent.

Students are sent to Central Maine Medical Center http://cmmc.org/ or St. Mary's http://stmarysmaine.com/ in Lewiston (approximately 25 minutes from Elan) for any emergencies, if a student needs an x-ray, etc. Parents are immediately notified if this happens and will be kept up to date on the student's progress.  In the event that the student is admitted, another Elan student or staff will be present for support. For acute emergency injuries and illnesses, Poland Fire and Rescue is minutes away and our experience with them over the years has been exceptional for responding.

Only necessary medications will be given such as asthma meds, inhalers, acne meds, etc.  Parents are asked not to send herbal supplements or protein drinks as we do not dispense them and they will be sent back.

Dental cleanings should be taken care of prior to admission or when the student has earned a home visit. If a student is on medication for allergies, etc., checkups are suggested.  Elan’s medical staff is available for consultation.
