Ropes Course
Ropes Courses have been in existence for over 30 years. They are used to create artificial obstacles to enable participants to gain confidence. Corporations use these types of courses to help build teamwork, communication, problem solving and trust. They are also used for therapeutic recreation and counseling. Elan School has added a low element challenge ropes course. The term "low element" refers to the fact that the activities are conducted a few feet off the ground and include the safety mechanism called "spotting."
Dana Hodgdon, Recreation Director and Physical Education teacher at Elan School, built the course. It consists of 15 different challenges and all help to foster trust and respect, as well as care and concern for those involved. The ropes course is a valuable mechanism for teaching teamwork and cooperation, as well as helping with balance and concentration. The Elan staff are finding it to be a very valuable supplement to the work they are currently doing with the students within the house group setting. The students are excited about the challenges that are presented. Many find that their performance on the ropes course mirrors their performance within the house. They are able to clearly see what they need to work on within the Life Skills Program, in order to develop and nurture the skills they will need to be successful upon graduation from Elan's program. |
